Mississippi, let’s talk about it: The Hard Work of Racial Healing

  • Pascagoula Senior Center 1912 Live Oak Avenue Pascagoula, MS, 39567 United States (map)

Over the last year and a half, the world has turned upside down with global pandemic to social uprisings, police brutality to insurrection at the US Capital.  Yet, while noise has filled streets across the globe with transparent emotions and tough conversations, Mississippi has remained eerily quiet. Until now.

Mississippi, let’s talk about it: The Hard Work of Racial Healing is a training designed to cultivate a safe space for brave conversations around the difficult topic of race.

This 3-Day interactive workshop seeks to foster discussions that explore how the racial history in Mississippi still permeates the day-to-day culture along the Gulf Coast.  The focus of this experience aims to serve as a catalyst for personal introspection and to promote transparency that brings healing.

 The goal is to:

  • provide effective ways to engage hard topics

  • stimulate internal awareness of issues such as trauma, racial healing, grief, and forgiveness

  • travel into discussions that require vulnerability and courage

  • uncover impactful truths that promote personal healing through storytelling

In addition, the seminar will cover the importance of exploring the body to release negative past experiences. We will utilize the five senses through movement, breath, stillness, and journaling exercises as grounding techniques. These will serve as vital tools to draw upon as participants continue through the trauma healing work.

This program is for:

  • professionals who want to be a part of changing the narrative

  • allies who want to support the movement of racial healing

  • young activists / civically engaged leaders

  • senior citizens who want to share their stories and hear from others

  • educators who want to learn and grow in empathy toward issues their students are facing

  • nonprofit professionals who work in social justice space

  • elected officials / civic leaders and their staff
